Pactolus Passes Quarter-million Sessions Benchmark, Supporting 8-10 Million Active Subscribers
More Economical Session Licensing for Multi-Service Bundles vs.
Purpose-built or Java-Based Solutions Drive Growth.
Marlborough, MA - October 29, 2007 -
Pactolus Communications Software Corp., makers of the industry's most broadly-deployed SIP applications and service creation/delivery solutions, today announced that it has licensed over a quarter of a million service session licenses, achieving 3 - 4 billion user service minutes per month. Pactolus unique and off-the-shelf IP voice services are deployed globally by leading service providers and MSOs, such as XO Interactive, WebEX, Alestra and Primus, as well as through leading VoIP infrastructure OEMs.
The exceptionally high scale of its IP voice service deployments are enabled by Pactolus' underlying SIP object/XTML service delivery platform, which avoids the delays and scale limits associated with JAVA-based VoIP services whose high levels of processor interruptions per-call can increasingly disrupt real time IP voice services as service usage expands.
Today's 250,000 session benchmark translates into upwards of 8 to 10 million subscribers served on an ongoing basis: Pactolus IP voice service applications are licensed per active application server 'session,' an extremely economical usage-based model where each session typically supports multiple subscribers, depending on the service type. The company's various real-time IP communication services - including custom, conferencing, IP PBX and prepaid calling - support from 1 to 50 users per session. Pactolus departs from the enterprise-centric 'user license' model, where each active license can support only a single potential user. The user license model is typically less attractive to service providers, as it requires pre-payment for demand levels that may not be realized either initially or over the long term.
The Yankee Group's Brian Partridge commented on the session licensing model in the recent Next Generation IP Services: It's All About Sessions DecisionNote: "Application servers run active subscribers in what is called a live "session" and there is a multiplier of N subscribers per session depending on the type of application that is running. Thus, a 100,000 IP Centrex subscriber deployment may only need 10,000 sessions – a ratio of 10 subscribers per session." The session model is a broad common denominator of capacity that can be used across multiple applications and services, for this reason it is substantially more advantageous than user licenses for service providers deploying service bundles.
In addition to session licenses of its full RapidFLEX Service Delivery Platform and SIPware turnkey services, Pactolus also separately licenses session ports of individual RapidFLEX resources such as the multi-protocol, software-based RapidFLEX Media Server, which enables service providers to scale their services economically on an ongoing basis and to accommodate usage demand peaks. Pactolus also offers the RapidFLEX Service Creation Environment, RapidFLEX Service Delivery Platform, and some reference applications as open source/open access on the SIPdev.org developer community wiki, enabling economical development of new IP services with sharply reduced overhead and initial session license costs.
Pactolus Founder and CTO Dave Horton acknowledged the company's significant near and long-term growth, concluding: "Tier 1's are increasingly seeking to replace old technologies with highly scaled IP voice services, Tier 2's and leading MSO's are adopting IP voice networks for calls and services, and virtually all operators and service providers are looking to expand their service reach. The achievement of a quarter-million active IP sessions marks a true benchmark both for Pactolus, and for the industry's ongoing migration to IP services."
