Pactolus Drives BlogTalkRadio's Real-Time IP Broadcast Network

BlogTalkRadio – The First “Social Radio Network” - Migrates to Pactolus, Integrates New Collaboration and Control Features and Achieves Telco-Class Scale and Reliability.

Marlborough, Mass. - May 14, 2007 -

Pactolus Communications Software Corporation, makers of the industry’s most broadly-deployed VoIP applications and service creation/delivery solutions, today announced its selection and deployment by BlogTalkRadio. An innovative, award-winning “social radio network”, BlogTalkRadio combines Internet radio, social networking and traditional talk radio, enabling users to host radio format talk shows that reach and interact with mass audiences in real time. Its rapidly growing popularity and programming triggered its migration from another leading IP service platform to Pactolus.

BlogTalkRadio’s user-driven genres range from comedy, sports, political commentary, religion and lifestyle programming to specific issues and interest shows. It merges radio, the oldest broadcast medium, with Web 2.0, enabling hosts to broadcast to mass audiences via Internet radio, as in a classic talk show format, but also uniquely enables listeners to respond and participate in real time via Internet and call-in. BlogTalkRadio is considered to be the first “Social Radio Network” format of its type.

BlogTalkRadio Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Bob Charish notes: “Like many new media start-ups, our goal was to fundamentally change the nature of Internet-based communications. We’ve now grown to support more than 750,000 listeners a month and 100 live shows a day, and the increasing popularity of BlogTalkRadio makes it obvious that we need the most scalable, feature-flexible service creation and delivery platform, which makes Pactolus the obvious choice and a partner in our growth.”

BlogTalkRadio successfully migrated from an entry level open source-based application to a first-of-its-kind, telco grade IP collaboration and conferencing IP service, developed with Pactolus’ object-based RapidFLEX Service Creation Environment. The application provides massive-scale custom conferencing and collaboration capabilities, delivered across a next generation network with carrier-class reliability and numerous innovative features that support and manage spontaneous, mass interaction. The service employs frameworks from the increasingly popular SIPdev.org open source/open availability developer community wiki. It uses SOAP to trigger real-time conference commands from a Web interface, such as mute/unmute, etc. The application integrates media resources with a Convedia® media server SIP/MSML interface, and interoperates with a gateway for PSTN access.

Pactolus President, CTO and Founder David Horton summarizes: “BlogTalkRadio’s engaging interactive format and rapid-growth establish it as a particularly exciting new media start-up. Its migration underscores that new media forums such as BTR need Pactolus’ unique telco-class scale, power & flexibility to drive ongoing innovation and growth. We’re delighted to be part of BTR’s phenomenal expansion.”
